“I became interested in art early in my life. When I was three, my father, a second Lieutenant in the Army was assigned to a NATO unit located in a small village in Germany. Unfortunately, our household goods would take several months to arrive at our new home. I missed my toys. And with no TV and no playmates, I became very sad. My mother said, ‘No worries, we can make something for you to play with.’ She took some of our moving boxes and covered them with white paper. She took my crayons and drew details of a stove and a refrigerator on the paper. I couldn’t believe it! The realization that I could create something special fascinated me, and I immediately began to draw toys I missed and even to draw things I saw in the countryside. Soon, I started making up stories about my drawings. This new skill opened a much bigger world to me. In fact, I drew and painted from morning to night. I even decided to draw a full size portrait of myself on my bedroom wall. That particular artistic design was not greatly appreciated.

“As I moved on in age and interest, I never lost the desire to draw and paint. Throughout my life I have always been drawn to color, shape, and design found in nature and in the human form. My art teachers in high school not only taught me about different mediums, they inspired me to push myself and believe in my ability to find joy and satisfaction through my painting using acrylics and oils, photography and other mediums. I have especially enjoyed finding beauty in items that might normally be overlooked by others. For example, I like to photograph rustic metal and discarded tools, editing the photography using color to enhance the beauty of the photograph.

“In recent years, I found that I enjoyed creating inspirational cards with ink and colored pencil for friends and family going through chemo treatments. Some have shared that they find comfort holding the cards during treatments. I hope to continue creating art that will comfort and speak to others going through difficult times.

“My ongoing goal is to continue to learn and explore different mediums, finding new ways to approach my passion for art.”
