Leaves and flowers have an uncanny ability to remind us of people we know, places we’ve been, or traits we aspire to cultivate within ourselves. However, since they are ephemeral, it is difficult to keep them with us for long. In this class, you will learn how to preserve the image of a leaf for a lifetime. You’ll select a real leaf (or two, if you prefer earrings) from the vast variety of leaves available at the Garden and cover it with several layers of Fine Silver Metal Clay paste. When the piece is fired in the kiln, the leaf will burn off, leaving behind a replica of the leaf in .999 pure Fine Silver. We will teach you all the ways to hang your piece, as well as basic metal clay handling and finishing techniques. Tools will be provided for use during the class.
You will need to purchase a kit containing all of the materials required to make a necklace or a pair of earrings for $55 (tax included) from the instructor at the time of the class (cash or credit card only). The range and uniqueness of many of the leaves available in class make it a favorite for both new “metal clayers” and experienced artists. By the end of the class, you will have a finished piece. There will be a lunch break, so please bring your own lunch or plan to grab one from a nearby restaurant. Class size is limited. Register by April 12. $65 MBG Members/$73 Non-Members (plus $55 kit fee payable to instructor at time of class). Click to register.
